It is rare for journalists in Kenya to fact-check budgets, but PesaCheck, Kenya’s first fact-checking news service, has a team of reporters producing data-driven stories to show local journalists that evidence-based reporting on financial issues is possible. PesaCheck uses stories, infographics and data visualizations to help Kenyans understand complex public finance issues so they can make informed decisions and participate in the budget-making process. Following the success of PesaCheck in Kenya, our Fellows expanded it to Tanzania in 2017.
