It is rare for journalists in Kenya to fact-check government budgets, but PesaCheck, the country’s first fact-checking news service, has a team of reporters producing data-driven stories to show local journalists that evidence-based reporting on financial issues is possible.

PesaCheck uses stories, infographics and data visualizations to help Kenyans understand complex public finance issues so they can make informed decisions and participate in the budget-making process.

Following the success of PesaCheck in Kenya, ICFJ Fellows expanded the initiative to cover issues of public interest in Tanzania and Zimbabwe. In Zimbabwe, PesaCheck provided the first live election fact-checking during the country's 2018 presidential election.
